Today In History – January 19

On January 19, 1883, the first electrical system began work at Rosell, New Jersey.

As part of an experiment to prove that an entire community could be lit by electricity from a shared, essential generating system, Thomas Edison used the Rosell community to prove that electrifying a town could be done. He set up a steam-driven generator that sent electricity through the wire strung overhead to a store, the town’s railway depot, about forty houses, and one hundred and fifty street lights.
