On January 26, 1482, the first printed edition of the Hebrew Bible was completed in Bologna, Italy. The book was printed by an Italian-Jewish printer named Abraham ben Hayyin dei Tintori.
This first edition was a printing of the Pentateuch, or Torah, which contained the first five books of the Christian and Jewish Bibles- Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.
The text consisted of large, clear score letters, accompanied by a translation in the Jewish biblical language Aromatic. The commentary by Rashi, a medieval French rabbi and author of a comprehensive commentary on the Talmud and the Hebrew Bible, was located above and below the main text.
