National Geographic Society

On January 13, 1888, the National Geographic Society was formed. Headquartered in Washington DC, National Geographic was founded ” to increase and diffuse geographic knowledge.” The Society takes its interest in world culture and knowledge and uses it to teach people through its magazine, TV channel, website, events, and other operations.

The National Geographic Society began as a club for an elite group of academics and wealthy patrons interested in travel and exploration. After preparing our constitution and a plan of organization, the society was incorporated two weeks later. On January 27, Gardner Green Hobart, the co-founder of AT&T, became the Society’s first president. His son-in-law, Alexander Graham Bell, took over the role in 1897.
