Pride and Prejudice Published

On January 28, 1813, Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice was published. The novel follows the character development of Elizabeth Bennet, the protagonist who, throughout the book, has to learn that hasty judgments come with repercussions.

Since its release, Pride and Prejudice has remained one of the most loved books of all time.

Jane Austen began writing the novel in 1796 after staying at Goodnestone Park in Kent with her brother and his wife. The first manuscript was finished around August 1797 and was initially titled First Impressions.

Between 1811 and 1812, Jane Austen made significant revisions to her manuscript, and the story was renamed Pride and Prejudice. The rights to publish the manuscript were sold around this time when Thomas Egerton bought them for £110 (about £7,800 today). Austen’s original manuscript remains lost in history.
